When Franz and Maria Wagnermayr opened the Angerhof in 1985, they were the pioneers of wellness in the Bavarian Forest. They wanted to create a place where their guests would feel completely at ease. Over the decades, they transformed the small 30-bed guesthouse on the Angerwiese meadow into a haven where rootedness in the region meets forward-thinking wellness. Every stage of construction reflects a love for the Bavarian Forest, every relaxation room tells stories from the region. Natural materials blend seamlessly with contemporary design, and the unique family philosophy can be felt in every corner of the hotel: personal interactions at the bar in the evening, genuine conversations with regulars, herbs from our own organic garden, and fresh produce from neighbouring farms.

Franz Wagnermayr completed his vocational training at his parents’ guesthouse in Austria and, after spending several years travelling around Europe, brought a clear vision to his wife Maria’s home village: a hotel where human interactions matter and wellness goes far beyond saunas and pools. Growth with foresight
When small things become great: after opening in 1985 with just 30 beds, 4 phases of construction were carried out up to 2003, transforming the Angerhof into one of the 10 best wellness hotels in Europe – as confirmed by Stiftung Warentest. In 2013, a 500-metre barefoot trail was added, and in 2020, the unique WaldSpa was created. 2 combined heat and power plants, a wood-chip heating system, and a photovoltaic system are testament to the Angerhof’s commitment to sustainability, which has been awarded the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment’s Gold Environmental Seal. 1985
The beginnings in 1985 were modest: after completing his vocational training at his parents’ inn in the Austrian district of Schärding and spending several years travelling through Europe, Franz Wagnermayr founded Hotel Angerhof with his wife Maria in her home village of Sankt Englmar on the “Angerwiese” (meadow), initially with 30 beds. Franz Wagnermayr is regarded as a pioneer in the Bavarian Forest for the wellness concept of body, mind, and soul.
1990
Following four rapid successive construction phases between 1985 and 2003, Angerhof was considered one of the 10 best wellness hotels in Europe. Over a five-year cycle, Franz and Maria Wagnermayr gradually expanded the small 30-bed hotel, founded in 1985, into today’s sports and wellness hotel.
2003
The crowning glory came in the February 2003 issue of “Stiftung Warentest”, when the hotel was named the best wellness hotel in the up-to-4-star category in the “Wellness Hotels in Germany” test.
2020
In 2019, groundbreaking took place for the construction of a unique “WaldSpa” covering around 6,500m² of indoor and outdoor space. Despite two coronavirus-related lockdowns, the time was used to complete the wellness extension and carry out extensive renovations inside the building. Natural materials and local craftsmanship characterise the ambience. In addition, emphasis has been placed on increasing the use of renewable energy technologies. Two combined heat and power units complement the existing wood chip heating system and solar panel array.
