Summit bliss and forest air: explore Bavaria on your walking holidays
The perfect start to a summer’s day in Bavaria on your walking holidays? Damp grass beneath your feet, the scent of spruce and earth in the morning air, and above it all a bright-blue sky that seems to stretch on forever. Best of all, one of the region’s most diverse natural landscapes lies right on the Angerhof’s doorstep: 120 kilometres of marked hiking trails, the 7 legendary peaks that tower over 1,000 metres high around St. Englmar, and one of the region’s largest mountain bike networks invite you to enjoy summer refreshment at 900 metres above sea level – right where the crisp mountain air meets the vast horizon.

The mountainous landscape around St. Englmar is one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the Bavarian Forest – whether you explore it on one of our guided hikes or on your own. Seven peaks that tower over 1,000 metres line up here along the ridge, led by Mt Hirschenstein (1,095m) with its legendary panoramic views, followed by Mt Knogl (1,056m), Mt Pröller (1,048m), and Mt Predigtstuhl (1,024m). The best thing about the huge network of footpaths: depending on how you feel on the day, you can choose between leisurely walks in the valley or challenging climbs to the summit. The Goldsteig premium hiking trail, one of Germany’s best-known long-distance trails, also runs right through the region, as do the historic Baierweg, Wolfgangweg, and Jakobsweg (Way of St James).
The largest interconnected, signposted mountain bike trail network in the region stretches out around the Angerhof: a 300-kilometre route over mountain ridges, through river valleys, and into the Šumava National Park in Czechia. While the low-lying areas are perfect for leisurely cycling, the mountain trails reward you with spectacular panoramic views. Simply set off on your bike straight from the Angerhof – whether on your own or on one of our guided bike tours. And thanks to our mountain bike and e-bike rental service (for a fee), you can travel light.
At several riding stables in the immediate vicinity, you can discover the Bavarian Forest from the saddle – letting you experience the forests, meadows, and rolling hills around St. Englmar from a new perspective. All stables offer professional lessons for beginners as well as trail rides for experienced riders.
The idyllic Regental valley between Viechtach and Blaibach is nicknamed “Bavarian Canada” – and more than lives up to this reputation on the water. On guided half-day and full-day tours run by external operators, you’ll glide through the unspoilt river landscape with its dense riverside forests, tranquil bays, and imposing rock faces.
Keeping fit in the Angerhof’s gym
Exercise promotes well-being. That’s why you’ll find fitness options inside the Angerhof, too: the gym with premium Matrix equipment and David back training, the hotel’s own indoor bouldering wall, the 500-metre-long barefoot sensory trail in the park, and the sports and activity programme that changes every week ensure that boredom is never an issue.
