Housed in the former farm buildings of the vicarage in Rattenberg, a charming holiday resort in the St. Englmar region, the museum of local history takes you on a journey through time exploring rural life. Lovingly collected treasures tell the story of everyday life in bygone days: agricultural and craft tools, a fully equipped cobbler’s workshop, and a historic classroom are waiting to be discovered. The Bavarian Forest Association has been preserving these precious records of regional history and keeping this heritage alive since 1992.

Mitterfels Castle
Mitterfels Castle towers high above the Menach Valley. It was built in the 12th century by the Counts of Bogen on a naturally protected rocky outcrop – the “middle castle” between Bogen and Falkenfels. For around 500 years, it served as the seat of the ducal administrative and district court. Today, the local history museum, housed in the former prison wing, tells the story of rural crafts and life in bygone eras, and even boasts a historic village pharmacy. History comes alive and becomes tangible in 30 lovingly furnished rooms, including recreated workshops of blacksmiths, cobblers, and wheelwrights.
